Drainage in Middle Ridge.

Middle Ridge is one of Toowoomba’s elevated, leafy southern suburbs: larger blocks, established homes and plenty of slope. Steep driveways funnelling storm water at garages, and runoff sheeting down between blocks, are the defining drainage problems up here.

Why Middle Ridge

The Middle Ridge drainage story.

Steep driveways and the garage problem.

Middle Ridge sits high on the ridge, and a lot of homes here have steep driveways that drop toward the house. In a normal shower it is no issue, but a proper Toowoomba storm turns that driveway into a chute that funnels water straight at the garage door. The classic fix is a heavy-duty channel drain cut across the base of the drive, connected to a stormwater line out to the kerb. We do more of these in Middle Ridge and neighbouring Rangeville than anywhere else.

Runoff between sloping blocks.

On a slope, water doesn’t respect boundaries. Runoff from an uphill neighbour can sheet across a yard and pool against the downhill house. A graded swale or spoon drain across the top of the block, feeding a stormwater line, intercepts that water and leads it safely around the house to a lawful outlet. Getting the interception line in the right place is the whole game here.

Slope helps, but the clay still moves.

The good news on the ridge is that there is plenty of fall to get water away, so gravity stormwater systems work well and charged systems are rarely needed. The catch is the same reactive clay as the rest of Toowoomba: it still cracks rigid pipe and still holds water in flatter pockets. We bed lines in gravel, and where a yard pocket stays wet we add a wrapped ag drain. Mature gardens also mean the occasional root-invaded line to clear.

Typical Middle Ridge jobs.

  • Heavy-duty channel drains across steep driveways ($1,200-$2,500)
  • Swale and surface drains intercepting between-block runoff
  • Gravity stormwater connections taking advantage of the slope
  • Ag drains in flatter wet pockets of larger blocks
  • Clearing root-invaded lines under established gardens

A worked example.

A Middle Ridge home with a steep concrete driveway funnelling every storm into the garage: we cut a 5 metre heavy-duty channel drain across the base, connected it to a new stormwater line out to the kerb, and reinstated the concrete. $1,750, and the garage has stayed dry through every storm since.
