Blocked drain clearing in Toowoomba.
A blocked stormwater or sewer line is a symptom, not the problem. We clear the blockage with high-pressure jetting, then put a camera down the line to find why it blocked, so you get a fix that lasts rather than a clear you repeat every year.
Clear it, then find out why it blocked.
When a drain backs up, gurgles, or the gully overflows in a storm, the quick fix is to rod it and walk away. That is fine for a one-off, but in Toowoomba the blockage usually comes back, because the underlying cause is still there. Our approach is to clear the line properly with high-pressure water jetting, then run a CCTV camera down it to see exactly what caused the blockage and where. Only then do we know whether you need a clean, a root cut, or a section of pipe replaced.
The three Toowoomba culprits.
- Tree roots. Mature street trees and garden trees send fine roots into any weeping pipe joint, then thrive on the moisture and the nutrients. They are the number one cause of recurring blockages across the older suburbs.
- Silt. The fine black-soil clay washes into stormwater lines, especially where the original fall was laid too flat. It builds up slowly until the line chokes.
- Pipe damage. The seasonal swelling and shrinking of reactive clay cracks older rigid pipe at the joints. That both lets roots in and lets the pipe sag and collect debris.
High-pressure jetting.
A water jetter cuts roots, scours silt and flushes a line far more thoroughly than rods or a plumber’s snake. It restores the full bore of the pipe rather than just punching a hole through the blockage, so the line drains at its proper rate again and is far slower to re-block.
CCTV camera inspection.
For anything more than a simple surface blockage we send a drain camera down the line. We see the actual cause, locate it to within a metre, and you keep the footage, which matters for insurance, strata and selling a home. If the camera shows a collapsed or root-invaded section, we quote a targeted repair: cut out the bad length, re-lay it on proper gravel bedding so the reactive clay does not crack it again, and reinstate the surface.
A worked example.
A Kearneys Spring home with a stormwater gully that overflowed every storm: jetting cleared a heavy root mass, and the camera found the roots entering at a cracked joint about four metres in, under the side garden. We dug down, replaced 1.5 metres of pipe with a proper bedded joint, and reinstated. Clear plus camera plus repair: $1,150, and the gully has run clear since. We work right across Kearneys Spring. If the real issue turns out to be a yard that floods rather than a single line, see stormwater drainage and our guide to fixing a flooding backyard.
Common blocked-drain questions.
How much does it cost to clear a blocked drain in Toowoomba?
Clearing a blocked stormwater or sewer line typically runs $350 to $900 depending on access, cause and how far in the blockage sits. A simple rod-and-clear is at the lower end; jetting a heavy root mass or silt down a long line, with a camera inspection, sits higher. If the camera shows a collapsed pipe, we quote the repair separately rather than charging for repeated clears that won’t last.
What causes blocked drains in Toowoomba?
The three big causes are tree roots, silt, and pipe damage from reactive soil. Mature trees send roots into any weeping joint. Black-soil clay washes fine silt into lines with flat falls. And seasonal clay movement cracks older rigid pipe at the joints. A camera inspection tells us which one you are dealing with.
Do you use a camera to inspect blocked drains?
Yes. For anything beyond a simple surface blockage we run a CCTV camera so we can see the cause and its exact location rather than guessing. That means we clear the right blockage, and if there is damage we locate it to within a metre for a targeted repair. The footage is yours to keep.
Can you fix the pipe, not just clear the blockage?
Yes. If the camera shows the real problem is a cracked, root-invaded or collapsed pipe, we quote the repair: cut out and replace the damaged section, re-lay on proper gravel bedding so the reactive clay does not crack it again, and reinstate. The goal is a drain that stays clear, not a yearly call-out.
