Which drainage pipe, wrap and grate actually survive Toowoomba black soil.

Short answer for a typical Toowoomba house: 100mm uPVC stormwater pipe to AS/NZS 1254 bedded in 20mm washed aggregate, stepped up to DWV grade under any driveway; a slotted ag line in a trench fully lined with 140 gsm or heavier non-woven geotextile, not a sock on the pipe; and a ductile iron Class B grate anywhere a car crosses. The cheap version of the same job saves roughly 25 per cent and lasts one to three wet seasons.

Reading the product

What the numbers on the box actually mean.

Four numbers decide almost everything about how long a drainage job lasts here, and none of them are in the marketing copy. If you learn only these four, you can read a drainage quote better than most people who write them.

The standard number on the pipe.

Buried stormwater pipe in Australia is generally made to one of two standards, and they are not interchangeable. AS/NZS 1254 covers uPVC pipe for stormwater and surface water: lighter wall, cheaper, and perfectly good for roof water running through a lawn or a garden bed. AS/NZS 1260 covers uPVC for drain, waste and vent work: heavier wall, more crush resistance, and the correct product wherever the line runs under a driveway, a shed slab, a paved courtyard or a thickened edge beam. A cheap quote uses the light product everywhere, because it costs about 30 per cent less and looks identical in the trench. In black soil that also moves seasonally, a thin wall pipe under a concrete driveway is a repair job waiting for a date. Slotted subsoil pipe is a separate standard again, AS 2439.1, and both the corrugated coil and the rigid slotted PVC versions are made to it.

The gsm on the geotextile.

Filter fabric is sold by weight, in grams per square metre, and by strength class. The product on the shelf at a garden centre labelled weed mat is usually 70 to 100 gsm, and it is engineered to block light rather than to filter soil under load. A drainage geotextile is non woven and needle punched, and for a domestic ag drain in Toowoomba black soil we specify 140 gsm as a floor and go heavier where the trench is deep or under a driveway. The physics is simple: the fabric has to pass water fast enough to keep up with the drain while holding back particles fine enough to float in it. Black soil fines are extremely fine. Undersized fabric blinds off, which means the pores clog with clay and the drain becomes a buried gravel sausage that holds water instead of moving it.

The aggregate size, and the word washed.

The correct backfill around a subsoil drain is 20mm single size washed drainage aggregate. Three words are doing work there. Single size means the stones are all roughly the same, so there are big voids between them for water to travel through. Washed means the quarry has taken the dust off. Aggregate means stone, not roadbase and not crusher dust. Crusher dust is the cheapest thing on the truck and it is the fastest way to kill an ag drain, because it is fines by design. We have opened up plenty of failed drains around Glenvale and Wilsonton where the pipe was perfect, the fall was perfect, and the whole trench was set solid with dust.

The class letter on the grate.

Grates and pit covers in Australia are load rated under AS 3996, and the class letter is the only part of the description worth reading. Class A is pedestrian traffic. Class B covers domestic driveways and car parks. Class C and above are for roads and heavy vehicles. The light polymer grate that comes bundled with a hardware store channel kit is a Class A part, and the first time a loaded ute or a delivery truck crosses it, it flexes, then it cracks at the fixing points. Replacing it means lifting and resetting the channel, which costs more than the grate upgrade would have. If a wheel will ever touch it, specify Class B ductile iron and be done with it.

Local conditions

What Toowoomba specifically does to drainage materials.

Reactive black cracking clay.

Much of Toowoomba, and nearly all of Glenvale, Westbrook, Wilsonton and Kearneys Spring, sits on highly reactive black and brown cracking clay, commonly classified Class E or Class P under AS 2870. It swells when wet and shrinks and cracks when dry, moving something like 40 to 75mm through a season. That single fact drives three material choices. First, bedding: a rigid pipe needs a layer of granular material under and around it so it is supported evenly rather than on random hard points. Second, jointing: solvent welded joints are stiff, so the bedding has to absorb the movement instead of the joint absorbing it. Third, fabric: this clay produces exactly the fine particles that blind filters, which is why the wrap is not optional here even though it is close to optional in sand.

Short, violent storms off the Range.

At about 690 metres on the lip of the Great Dividing Range, Toowoomba gets storm cells that drop a very large volume in a very short time. That is a sizing problem more than a materials problem, but it changes materials indirectly. Undersized pipe surcharges, surcharging lines push silt back into pits and ag outlets, and a channel drain with too little open grate area simply lets the sheet flow jump straight over it. Grate open area matters as much as channel width, and a tidy looking slotted grate can pass considerably less water than a heel guard mesh grate of the same length.

Frost, and rock on the eastern side.

The Downs get genuine winter frosts, with regular overnight lows around zero to three degrees and clear cold mornings. That is nowhere near enough to freeze a buried drain, but it does thermally cycle anything exposed. Cheap polymer grates and thin plastic pit lids go brittle over years of UV plus that daily swing, and then they crack. On the Range side, around Middle Ridge, Rangeville and parts of the escarpment, basalt sits close to the surface, which limits how deep a trench can realistically go and pushes the design towards a shallower, wider surface solution rather than a deep buried one. On the western flats the soil is deep and the constraint is the opposite: you have all the depth you want and very little fall.

Old street trees.

Established Toowoomba streets carry mature figs, camphor laurels and jacarandas, and roots follow water. Roots do not break sound uPVC. They find joints, and specifically they find joints that have already been levered slightly apart by clay movement. That is one more argument for proper bedding, and for heavier grade pipe wherever a big tree is close enough that its canopy reaches over the trench line.

The cheap specification, and exactly how it fails here.

None of these are hypothetical. They are the five things we dig up most often, in the order we see them.

  1. Slotted pipe with a knitted sock, backfilled with crusher dust. The knitted sock is designed for sandy soils. In black soil the fines pass straight through the knit, fill the dust, and set. Typical time to failure is one to three wet seasons, and there is no repair, only replacement.
  2. Weed mat instead of drainage geotextile. Saves perhaps $4 per metre. Blinds off in a season, and because the trench looks correct from above, the homeowner usually blames the pipe.
  3. Stormwater grade pipe under a driveway. Saves around $40 to $60 per metre on a five metre crossing, so about $250. Costs $1,500 to $3,500 to fix, because the fix involves cutting concrete.
  4. No gravel bedding. Saves $15 to $25 per metre. Turns a 60 year line into a 15 year line, and it is completely invisible the day after backfill. This is the most common corner cut in the region.
  5. A Class A polymer grate across a driveway. Saves roughly $80 to $140 per metre. Cracks under the first heavy wheel, and the replacement usually means lifting the channel out of the concrete it is set into.

Add those up on a typical job and the cheap specification saves about $1,800 on a $9,000 job, which is 20 to 25 per cent, and it converts a job you never think about again into a job you pay for twice. What sales words like commercial grade are worth.

Nothing, on their own. Commercial grade, heavy duty, premium, builders grade, contractor series and council spec are not defined terms and nobody audits them. A polymer channel with a Class A grate can quite legally be advertised as heavy duty, because the channel body is rated higher than the grate sitting in it, and that is the exact trap. Council spec means something only where the job is genuinely being built to a Toowoomba Regional Council standard drawing, which happens on kerb crossings and connections to council infrastructure and almost nowhere else on a domestic block.

The fix is to ask for five things in writing on the quote, and to treat a refusal as an answer in itself:

  • Pipe diameter and the standard it is made to, for each separate run.
  • Bedding material, and the depth of bedding under and over the pipe.
  • Geotextile weight in gsm, and whether it lines the whole trench or just socks the pipe.
  • Aggregate size, and whether it is washed and single size.
  • The AS 3996 class letter on every grate and pit lid.

What we would specify on a typical Toowoomba house.

Take the most common job in this region: a brick veneer home built between the mid 1970s and the early 2000s, roughly 150 to 200 square metres of roof, sitting on deep black soil in Glenvale, Kearneys Spring, Wilsonton or Newtown, with a flat back yard that stays soft for a week after rain and water tracking towards the garage. This is the specification we would put on that job, and it is the one we would want to be held to.

  1. All downpipes collected into 100mm uPVC stormwater pipe to AS/NZS 1254, laid at a minimum of 1 in 100 to a lawful kerb outlet.
  2. Every driveway, path or slab crossing in DWV grade uPVC to AS/NZS 1260, with 100mm of compacted aggregate cover over the pipe.
  3. Bedding and haunching in 20mm washed aggregate, at least 75mm under the pipe and up to the springline, with clean fill above.
  4. A 300 by 300 poly pit at every junction and at the base of any rainhead, with a Class A lid in the lawn and a Class B lid anywhere near the driveway.
  5. Subsoil relief in 100mm slotted ag pipe to AS 2439.1, in a 300mm wide by 500mm deep trench fully lined with 140 gsm non woven geotextile, filled with 20mm washed aggregate, laid at 1 in 200 minimum into a silt pit before the outlet.
  6. One polymer channel with a ductile iron Class B grate at the garage threshold, and a formed spoon drain rather than a channel anywhere the flow is across open lawn.
  7. Turf lifted before the trench opens and relaid, or fresh turf where the old turf cannot be saved.

Built to that specification, that job in 2026 sits at roughly $7,000 to $11,000 depending on how far away the lawful outlet is and whether there is rock. The identical job built to the cheap specification quotes at about $5,500 and needs revisiting inside five years. Where the expensive specification is a waste of money.

Being honest about this is the point of the page. Premium is not automatically right, and there are several places where we will actively talk a customer out of it.

  • Stainless grates on a back patio. They look excellent and cost roughly $100 more per metre than ductile iron. If nobody ever sees it, it is jewellery.
  • Rigid slotted PVC where a coil would do. The rigid line earns its extra $40 to $60 per metre under a slab or a driveway, where one day you will want to rod it. In the middle of a lawn you can simply dig it up, so buy the coil.
  • A channel drain where a spoon drain works. Sheet water across open lawn does not need a $260 per metre grated channel. A formed spoon drain at $60 to $130 per metre moves more water and you can mow over it.
  • An ag drain when the problem is surface water. This is the most expensive mistake of all, because it does not fail, it simply never works. An ag drain relieves a saturated soil profile.   • Detention tanks nobody asked for. On site detention is imposed as a condition of an approval. If your approval does not mention it, you do not need one, and anyone selling you one should be showing you the condition first. The council approval page explains when it genuinely applies.

For completeness, and so it is not a surprise later: we are drainage contractors, not landscapers. We reinstate topsoil and turf and we leave the site tidy, but we do not rebuild retaining walls, replant garden beds or relay decorative paving, and that appears on the quote rather than at the end of the job.

What pipe should be used for stormwater drainage in Toowoomba?

The fabric adds roughly $6 to $12 per lineal metre and buys most of the life.
What is the difference between weed mat and drainage geotextile?
Weed mat is generally 70 to 100 grams per square metre and is designed to block light, not to filter water under load. Drainage geotextile is non-woven needle-punched fabric from about 140 grams per square metre upwards, and it lets water through while holding the fines back. Weed mat used in an ag trench in Toowoomba blinds off within a season, which is why a cheap ag drain quote is worth reading carefully.
What grate class do I need where a car drives over it?
AS 3996 sets the load classes for grates and covers, and Class A is pedestrian traffic only. Anywhere a car crosses, Class B is the practical minimum, which in the real world means a ductile iron grate rather than the light polymer one that comes in the cheap kit. A Class B channel run costs around $240 to $380 per lineal metre installed, against $180 to $260 for a pedestrian rated one.
Is crusher dust acceptable as backfill around an ag drain?
No. Crusher dust is mostly fines, and fines are exactly what kills a subsoil drain in reactive clay. The correct backfill is 20mm single size washed drainage aggregate, which works out at roughly 0.21 tonnes per lineal metre for a 300mm wide by 500mm deep trench. If a quote does not name the aggregate, ask before you sign it.
Does commercial grade mean anything on a drainage quote?
Not on its own. Commercial grade, heavy duty, premium and builders grade are sales words with no definition behind them. The words that actually mean something on a drainage quote are the standard number, the pipe diameter and wall grade, the geotextile weight in grams per square metre, the aggregate size and the AS 3996 class letter on any grate. Ask for those five things in writing and the quotes become comparable.
