How long drainage actually lasts in Toowoomba.
Drainage is buried, so nobody thinks about its age until it stops working. The honest answer is that the pipe almost never fails first. What fails is what is around it, and in this black soil that changes every number.
The pipe outlives the install.
Modern uPVC stormwater pipe made to AS/NZS 1254 has a design life of 50 to 100 years, and in stable ground it comfortably reaches the top of that. Left alone in a laboratory it would outlive the house. So when a stormwater line in Toowoomba dies at fifteen years, the pipe is not the reason. The bedding, the joints and the grade are.
Here is the mechanism. Pipe laid straight into reactive clay is supported unevenly, in random hard points rather than along its length. As the clay swells in summer and shrinks and cracks in the dry, those points move independently and work the line. Joints get levered apart, the pipe gets point-loaded and cracks, and the fall, which under AS/NZS 3500.3 only has to be 1 in 100 to start with, gets flattened or locally reversed. A 1 per cent grade has no margin to give away. Lose a few millimetres over a couple of metres and you have a belly, the belly collects silt, and the silt becomes the blockage you eventually pay someone to clear.
The same pipe bedded in gravel is a different product in practice. The gravel spreads the load, lets the line ride the seasonal movement instead of fighting it, and keeps the grade honest. That single detail is most of the difference between 15 years and 60. It is also the first thing cut out of a cheap quote, because once it is backfilled nobody can tell.
One more thing worth knowing about older Toowoomba homes. If the house dates from earlier than about the mid-1970s, the original line is likely earthenware in short lengths with mortared joints. Those pipes are at or past the end of their service life now, and the joints are exactly where roots get in. If you have an original line of that vintage and it has never been looked at, its age alone is a reason to camera it.
One decision sets the entire lifespan.
Ag drain lifespan in Toowoomba is not really a range, it is a fork in the road. A geotextile-wrapped ag drain in this clay will realistically give you 15 to 30 years before the filter gradually blinds off with accumulated fines. A few other things shorten an ag drain here. Running it to an outlet that itself surcharges in a storm means water backs up and silt settles in the line. Laying it too shallow means it never intercepts the water table you were trying to reach. Planting a thirsty tree over the top of it gives roots a permanent invitation. And an ag drain that was installed to fix surface water, which it was never designed to do, was over by the day it went in. That distinction is covered properly in fixing a flooding backyard.
Channel drains, and when to stop repairing.
With channel drainage the body usually outlives the grate. A polymer concrete channel is good for decades. The grate is the wear part and the material decides it: a light galvanised grate in a driveway can distort or rust out in 5 to 10 years, while a heavy-duty ductile iron or stainless grate rated for vehicle loading will typically go 20 years or more. The more common failure is not the product at all, it is the install. A channel set without a proper concrete haunch rocks loose under wheel loads and takes the surrounding concrete with it, and no grate quality saves that.
So when do you stop repairing and replace? It depends on what the camera shows, which is why we camera before quoting rather than after. If a single section has failed and the rest of the line has good fall and sound pipe, cutting out and re-laying that section at $650 to $2,500 is obviously right. If the camera shows an earthenware line with root intrusion at multiple joints and a bellied grade, repairing one spot just shifts the problem and you will be back inside a couple of years, so a full replacement at $2,500 to $6,000 is genuinely cheaper over any sensible time frame. A worked example. A 1968 home at Kearneys Spring that had been paying for a drain clear roughly every eighteen months for a decade, which is around $5,000 of clearing with nothing to show for it. We cameraed the line ($340) and found original earthenware with root mats at four joints and a 40 millimetre belly midway. Repairing one joint would have been $900 and pointless. We replaced the full 24 metre run in uPVC on gravel bedding with two new pits, $4,850. It has not been touched since, and on the old cycle it would already have cost more than that in clears alone.
